Intimidating/Loyal and sometimes annoying rinks/supporters!!!

Thread starter #1
Just to pass a little time...I know during the WNIR days in particular our crowd had more than their fare share of chants and it was known to be an intimidating rink to the opposition.

With this in mind I wondered if anyone had any memories or knowledge of places that are damn tough to play in as a player due to the dedication of the opposition supporters or amusing/annoying as a supporter to attend.

The below YouTube videos are of Lynah Supporters and I believe the show all areas that I mentioned above quiet accurately. Must have been a real psychological test for any Nettie in particular to play there.

Part 1 introduces the rink and some of the chants and crowd support.

Part 2 shows more of the chants with the words.

This may not be your cup of tea but I just thought I would try and brighten up the boredom for some who maybe interested or just after some good old hockey fan rivalry. May well be annoying to some but...... Just imagine our crowd like this at our rink on game night. Maybe/Definately with some less annoying adaptations. Lol

I remember REALLY annoying Dustin Cameron of the Blaze up at the Skydome one Boxing Day.
The place was packed, standing room only and I ended up next to the home penalty box.
Cameron is given a minor penalty and is escorted to the box, effing and jeffing at the top of his voice to the officials as he goes.
Noticing his filthy mood I wondered out loud once or twice where he could have got such a potty mouth from, and in front of kids too.

He got progressively angrier until we scored on that PP and was led to the bench like Scrappy Doo on a bad day.

I miss away trips...

Both Durham and lower parliament Street in Nottingham were intimidating at times. The only time I ever worried about getting out of a rink in one piece though was after the tim salmon incident and resulting walk off at Telford. I still to this day hate that club, for what they did and for having the police follow us down the M5.

Nottingham’s old rink could certainly be intimidating, loved going there as I love that kind of atmosphere, sitting in amongst them with our Devils shirts on was certainly a blast.

That really reminded me of the old WNIR. Intimidating, yet, you knew it was all in jest and good form..... Mostly!!!

I remember going somewhere like Bracknell or Slough and one of their, folically challenged supporters was really trying to give it large to our supporters and our team if we conceded a goal or one of our players got levelled..... BUT..... then we scored a game winning goal with about 10 mins left. I think it may have been waffy that scored and one of our supporters kept standing after the goal celebrations and started pointing at the folically challenged opposing supporter and chanted "Your not singing, your not singing, your not singing got no hair, your not singing got no hair". Of course we ALL joined in and we never heard a peep out of said person again.

One of those had to be there moments maybe but hilarious.

Amazed you did not say Solihull which was by far the most intimidating rink had the mis-pleasure to be in during a game.. Spat at and punched through the netting etc and the walk back to changing rooms having drinks thrown etc.. Then playing rec games at least one player would end up in hospital or in our cause Moggy two!!! Give me Fife to go to any day over that place..

You're right, I'd forgotten about that dump. I once played a rec game (I think we might be taking about the same match) there where the "shower" was a rubber hose nailed to the wall. I also almost got assaulted in the same game on my way back to the bench at the end of my shift cos one of their thugs took exception to me giving him a gentle hook.

This sounds like a story I need to hear! I tried googling but came up with nothing, tell us the tale!

This was the first season in division 1 South. Telford and Slough were the contenders for the league. Slough had strengthen themselves with players from Streatham, whilst Telford under Chuck Taylor, were more akin to something out of slapshot.

That was the first season that we had Shannon hope, and he was arguably the best player in the league. Telford had recruited Tim salmon and Kevin Conway, who had a devastating partnership at ayr.

Telford's rink was absolutely packed and the atmosphere created by the Telford fans was very uncomfortable, particularly with some of us packed around the plexiglass and surrounded by their fans.

I seem to remember that Shannon was causing havoc for the Tigers, but the physically much smaller devils players were getting an absolute physical pasting. The referee was calling very little and devils fans and players were getting frustrated about the lack of protection. Then partway through the second period whilst skating behind the goal where I stood, salmon appeared to jab Shannon's face with his stick causing a horrible injury. Absolute mayhem ensued. I'm not sure, despite lawless' and kanewischer's protests there wasn't even a penalty called. As a result the devils skated off the ice back to their changing room. There was utter confusion. Eventually it was announced that the devils would not come back and the match was abandoned. The Telford fans were livid.

While the fans' bus drove down the M5 we became aware that there was a police vehicle following us. When we reached the services we were due to stop at, a police vehicle was blocking the entrance. The same at the next one too. We eventually had to go all the way to Bristol and stop at aust services.

It eventually emerged that someone in Telford had accused the devils fans of hooliganism, and had the police treat us like football thugs. The club made a complaint about this and there was subsequently iirc an apology from West Mercia police published on the match programme.

I seem to remember that the club was fined for the walk off, but this was only £1000. Some suggested that this was a result of other clubs having their own complaints about Telford's conduct that season.

The home game against the Tigers was a powder keg, but the league assigned a premier Division ref. Unfortunately the devils couldn't complete, but after that season Telford weren't a force again.

(Thanks to Anthony Beer's book "it's funny when you win everything" for jogging my memory on a couple of things.)

Ah Fife.
Memories of my first ever Scottish trip when a rather large Flyers fan with glasses, wild ginger hair and the reddest face I've ever seen decided he wanted to try and take on a full away block all by himself for some reason.
I could be wrong but I think he was the guy you can hear screaming "COME ON FLYERS" at random moments during every Flyers webcast.
He was ejected from the rink for his own safety in the end.

That was a wild read, thanks for taking the time to write this. I would love it if there was some sort of book / web resource that compiled all these old Devils stories that happened before video highlights became widespread.

Anthony beer and Andy Welch wrote books about that period. There are loads of wild stories though, only some of which I witnessed myself. Was anyone on here around for the body in the restaurant? Any ideas for more?
