What a weekend. What a season.
Second place and a trophy.
A competitive team, an entertaining team and a trophy winning team, every home game a sell out and an identity brought back to Devils hockey. That's an incredible return from one season. Given the previous 3 to 4 seasons of pain, that is superb. Big credit to the owners, backroom staff and players. Thommo and his team deserve a hell of a lot of credit. Not only has Thommo proven his worth but what a bloody likeable guy too. He knows how to lead. He's been classy, honest and upfront all season. Never once dodged a difficult question or decision. Just superb.
That final was something else. A controlled first period, totally outplayed in the second but we maintained our composure and two superb team goals built off a strong forecheck and then just pure Devils grit in the 3rd.
What a classy final as well. Credit to Tansey trying to shut his Steelers fans up as Jimmy lay on the floor. What a competitor that guy is. Took his goal well and had a good weekend too. Then you've got Fergie taking the trophy over to the Guildford fans to thank them. A lovely touch. He was honest from the outset. He moved on to win trophies and he waited for the right offer to come through. That gamble paid off for him and for us. He did all the dirty, hard graft over the weekend as he has done since joining. Then you've got Brandt facetiming (I assume) his family whilst the others raised the trophy. All really lovely things to see.
Personal highlight, Cap's goal in the semi. Nothing beats a 3rd/4th line goal, especially from someone who's growth in this team has been meteoric. He's had to wait for his time and had a few stutters but for the large part, when he was called upon, he took his chance to the extent where you couldn't ignore him. He just had to play in the build up to the playoff quarter final and then the finals weekend. What a guy.
Thank you Devils.
