Stingrays move for Sanford
Wednesday, September 30, 2009,
EXCEL Hull Stingrays coach Sylvain Cloutier believes James Sanford has "all the tools" to succeed in the Elite League.
The 25-year-old former Canada Under-18 international has made 123 appearances in the American Hockey League for Hamilton Bulldogs, Peoria Rivermen, Milwaukee Admirals and Chicago Wolves.
He flies into Britain next week and is expected to make his debut at Nottingham Panthers on Saturday October 10.
Cloutier said: "I am really excited about this signing.
"If you play that many games in the AHL then you are a pretty decent hockey player. He has got all the tools.
"He is a defensive-minded defenceman but he is also strong offensively.
"He will improve our transition which is something we needed to do and will improve our powerplay as he moves the puck well.
"James Hutchinson and Craig Mitchell have been our best two defencemen this season.
"They have been steady for us and have kept things simple and they will learn so much from this guy.
"He comes highly recommended and I have heard nothing but good things about him."
Sanford arrives initially to replace broken-arm victim Ryan Jorde.
However, it is expected that once Cloutier has the luxury of a fully-fit squad, the axe will fall on one of Stingrays' current 10 overseas' contingent.
Cloutier not hanging around, the revolving door is being oiled as we watch
