New Signing - Brett Ferguson

Would've thought the club Would've announced it on devils website signing news, who knows
I suspect MacLean is currently signed as IR cover for Lacroix. Not comfirmed as the club and EIHL havent't recently been giving out that information. If so, once Lacroix is fit again MacLean could then be signed as a full player or switched to be another IR cover if we have another injury at that time - the club has tended to do this to mean committing to a player as a full signing as late in the season as they can to keep more signing options available. We might never know but if the EIHL website does a roster update soon perhaps we'll get more information then.

Hmmmm. He's the epitome of the rat on the opposition that you love to hate. Had a habit of getting points against us and at least he'll be doing it for us rather than against us.

But as said above, he does take silly penalties.

I'm conflicted on this one. Hope he does well of course and well done to the Devils for moving to bring someone in to fill the Yaremko gap. But as others have said he's more of a Lacroix figure, and not the bigger body and skillset of Yaremko.

He'll do as a gap filler though.

Respectfully, he is much better than a ‘gap filler’!

He knows this league inside out so will hit the ground running, has put up great points over the years, captained the Flames when they were playing some great hockey, finishes every hit, gets under the skin of opponents, sticks up for team mates, very versatile. When you play his way you’ll take a silly penalty or two, but Thomson will rein that in! I would much prefer Ferguson than an unknown to the league who would inevitably take time to adjust. For me, superbly addition!

Ferguson is much more than a gap filler, as Phinktastique says and quite rightly so hopefully he will settle in quickly. This guy knows where the net is, always sticks up for his team mates and always gives 100% is a real leader and will surely be a real Devil. Very good signing and will be a great addition, well played devils.

By gap filler I mean: he's not been signed as part of our plans from the outset, he's being brought in as cover and in those circumstances then he's a great pick up. And yes I'd take a player who knows about the long slog that the EIHL is rather than an unknown who thinks they only have to turn up for playoffs

As long as he doesn't pick up silly penalties, he'll be fine. A couple years ago Cox and Sanford used to get so many cross checking and roughing penalties it was pointless, likewise Crawford. We seem to be taking penalties now when they are necessary, or at least taking someone from the opposition out as well.

I just don't want a return to those days when momentum was wasted, and opportunities given to other teams on the PP, for no good reason

I don’t see Ferguson as a replacement for Lacroix at all. He was and hopefully will still be, a high end EIHL player - definitely no gap filler for me and if he’s the same player that he was even last season, I cannot for the life of me see him being used just as injury cover. I think he will be a very influential signing for us this year. I don’t care if he picks up the odd stupid penalty - he plays with fire in his belly and that’s fine by me.

Yeah, good shout. I get what you mean in terms of the needless pens. We don’t need that of course - though really confident Thomo will make sure he only gives up pens for the bigger needed incidents. Lol. Other fans on Twitter are already saying they thought they had seen the back of him - that’s music to my ears!

Before checking, my impression was that he'd have clocked up tons of PIMs, but the stats don't really bear that out. He has had worse years, but last year he had 42 PIM from 50 league games - similar to Fournier, Gourley and Oli last year. What he got the pens for, and whether silly or not, is a different question, but he doesn't really look to be a major liability in terms of time spent in the box.

At Guildford he seemed to be a player who tried to do whatever was necessary to get his team over the line, and that attribute should be a major asset for the Devil's too.

I just hope he doesn't bring his sidekick Alvaro over too.

Lacroix averages around 0.5 to 0.6 points per game. Yaremko 0.6 to 0.9. Ferguson averages 0.7 to 1.25 pts per game. Yes he may take a few weeks to get to match fitness but this looks like an upgrade to me.

The scottish triple header is a good test for fitness, the devils will ease him in I'm sure, think December we will see him firing on all cylinders, when giants and steelers are in our gaff again .

35 years old and has played 2 games this year! Hopefully he’ll still be decent but would have liked to have seen somebody a bit younger.
He is 2 yrs younger than Joey, and how good is our skipper yes Joey has never stopped playing , and is a fitness guru. Hopefully he will fit in nicely, also how good have our lads played over this last weekend, after the Steelers game I slept like a log, and woke up in the fireplace.

Before we signed MacLean I heard a rumour that we were actively trying to sign a forward to cover injuries but there was nobody of a decent enough standard available so we were likely to sign a Dman and move Mosey up onto the wing. And that's exactly what happened.

Usually around late Oct-early Nov you have a flurry of EIHL signings with the N. American rosters pretty much finalised. This year there has been hardly any?

For whatever reason the market seems very quiet so far this season.

Superb addition. With his experience and previous success in this league, and his known character of putting everything out there, I knew he would hit the ground running! Great job recruiting him!!
