CARDIFF Devils captain Brad Voth has been hit by a savage 12-match ban.

Elite League officials ended a week in which Sheffield Steelers conducted a powerful media campaign against Voth by hitting the 6ft 5ins Canadian with a six-match suspension for “sucker-punching” an opponent and another six for “slashing to the back of an opponents legs”.

And Voth is faced with an additional 12-match suspended sentence “pending a repeat offence”.

The initial hit which Sheffield claimed could have injured Randy Dagenais and ended his season is not mentioned in the League press release.

Devils coach Gerad Adams is furious with the ban and the club are certain to appeal immediately.

“An appeal is 100 per cent certain,” said Adams, who did not wish to make any other comment.

The Devils are angry the Steelers issued statements from the club, coach Dave Matsos and Dagenais this week.

Cardiff will certainly question the actions of referee Matt Thompson and his linesmen, who took no action against either the Devils’ Doug MacIver and Sheffield’s Rod Sarich after their fight.

Chief referee Simon Kirkham and League director of hockey Andy French made the decision to ban Voth for a total of 12 matches – and they have also suspended Hull Stingrays’ Rob Kozak for 10 games after incidents in another match.

They have made an example of both players with a League statement saying: “After extensive video review, the incidents involving both Kozak and Voth have been deemed as being unacceptable.

“It is our duty to ensure that we send a message to all the clubs, the coaching staff and all the players as to what will not be tolerated.”

Voth will miss this weekend’s matches, at home to Hull tomorrow (7pm) and at Coventry Blaze on Sunday, because there is no time for the appeal to be heard before then.

Three independent Elite League directors will be sent copies of the match video.

None of the three will know who else is on the appeal panel and each will view the video and rule on Voth’s suspension

The Elite League statement talks of meting out “severe punishments” on Kozak and Voth.

“Kozak has been suspended for a total of 10 games for sucker-punching an opponent and bringing the game into disrepute with a further 10 games suspended for a repeat offence,” said the statement.

“Voth has received a 12-game ban for sucker-punching an opponent and slashing to the back of an opponent’s legs with a further 12 suspended again pending a repeat offence.

“Ice hockey is a very physical sport as everyone is well aware and, occasionally, tempers flare and there are flashpoint incidents.

“However, the games last Sunday saw incidents that we feel are beyond what is the normally acceptable in terms of physical contact and we felt the need to adjudicate strongly.

“It is our duty to ensure that we send a message to all the clubs, the coaching staff and all the players as to what will not be tolerated.”

Independent Elite league directors will be on the appeal panel? We've already had a statement from Belfast and opinions voiced from Newcastle and Edinburgh that they think the ban is justified. I don't fancy the chances of a successful appeal given this farcical scenario.

a lot of people are probably worried whats going to happen if people try to pick on our team now voth aint there but from the look of people against squeelers cambell was ready to drop mciver did and hartwick did...... plus prprich and jarvis are no slouches in this department either..

what we need now is the whole team to step up to the plate and win games and stick their fingures up to our doubters and say know us down we get back up stronger....

mciver impressed me as straight away he was there watching voths back and hartwick who isnt probably the greatest fighter was also having none of it so well done to him....

with G at the helm the devils can and will get stronger from here

so lets get the banners up put our voices in shouting order and really get behind the team on saturday...... i got my strepsils ready for the following day already ;)

Our team getting picked on?? Are you serious??!!! Thats not a concern at all lol..... What does concern me is when voth returns how many players are going to be winding him up to get that extra ban enforced!!!!

well perhaps i was i little off the mark there but a few people i have spoken to have voiced their concerns over this but as i pointed out that aint the case with the team we have this year....

with this in mind when voth gets back i hope we have enough "tough" players that are stepping up in his absence that he wont have to get involved....

for most of the game against the squeelers they were goading him and trying to get him and others to snap and i was so glad that he tried so hard to resist but as they say "its was the straw that broke the camels back"

Brad has been described as basically the Baby Eater but people forget how many times he is hit slashed goaded cross checked what ever and walks away from it.... people use the excuse hey he is big he can take it but thats by the by Brad is i think one of the most restrained players in the league....

taking a breath now lol

If I read right the probation is dependant on him not getting a game penalty for the same actions again. If he were to get a game penalty for something that wasn't 'suckerpunching' or 'slashing' he should be ok ... Mind you, he could probably get a game penalty for being 'Persistently Canadian in a Built Up Area' and they would use it as an excuse to ban him.

I think the ban is way over the top. Voth is one of the most entertaining players in the league, and i hope this doe'nt make him think twice about playing here next season. :x

We all need to show our support for Brad and the club.
If we can get as many fan's as possible at Saturday's game with protest t-shirts and banners to show that we are not going to accept this in justice!

this is great i dont care if it shows the league any thing i just think it will show Brad how much he is valued by the fans. Hopefully our support will be enough to dissappoint teams in the summer who try to sign him ( just so happend these are the teams that also want him banned) when he say "hey these guys want me i am coming back for another year" :D

Would it be possible to get any data on bans handed out by the league? For example, could we look at which players were banned, how long they were banned for, which team they played for and which team they were playing against when they offended?

It would be interesting to see how often Sheffield's name crops up on that list, and in what context.

I'm not saying that I expect a significant proportion of bans to be a result of teams playing Sheffield you understand! ;)
