Cardiff Devils v Belfast Giants
11th Nov 2009 | Posted by The-Inferno
The Devils took to the ice on Sunday against one of their closest rivals - without star player Mark Smith - and managed to grab victory in overtime despite playing one of their worst home games yet. Despite the game being scheduled to start at 6pm, faceoff was eventually at 8:10pm thanks to cancelled and delayed flights.
Unfortunately the Devils were not aided in their victory by the tactics of the Giants which involved, clutching, hooking and holding at every opportunity, whilst almost everytime the Devils entered the Giants zone they were found to be sporting the new Belfast Giants rucksack, coming in Johnson, Cook, Jacobsen and Phillips sizes. To order one of these exclusive rucksacks, simply stand on the ice in a Devils jersey and wait for the rucksack to attach itself to you, no actions necessary...
The Devils started off with their lines again a mixture, however the players seemed to benefit from Adams changes and helped us to weather the Giants onslaught. Adams himself deserves special mention for his play that led to Towe grabbing the Devils 1st goal.
The Devils seemed to be lacking something for the first two periods, physical and smart play was lacking and without Lyle standing on his head (again) to keep us in the game the scoreline could have been worse. The Giants took the lead in the 1st period after a period of sustained pressure, the Devils defence left a man unmarked and lyle was unfortunate to not make the save.
Devils 0-1 Giants. Cheverie from Sheilds and Jacobsen at 17:03.
Both teams could have been several goals up were it not for the play of the respective netminders, however Belfast were also let down by their Nottingham style PIMs which totalled 14minutes for the 1st period alone. Belfast conceded their last penalty at 19:53 with Jacobsen receiving 2minutes for hooking to ensure the Devils started the 2nd period with the 1 man advantage.
The Devils started the 2nd period on the powerplay, but after almost 2minutes chances were still lacking and the Giants seemed to be firmly in control. Mcmorrow played a smart game and despite only managing 6 shifts all game, in the 2nd period he seemed to be allowed to hit almost any Devils player he wanted at will, with no answer from any of the Devils it seemed they were getting bullied in our own rink!Despite having several 5on3 chances during the 2nd period, the score remained at Devils 0-1 Giants at the end of the period.
With the Giants having conceded another penalty towards the end of the 2nd period, the Devils were again on the powerplay at the start of the 3rd period. However, the powerplay was again fruitless and it seemed the Giants were still in control. However, thanks to the play of the 3rd line the Devils managed to equalise just under 2minutes into a rare 5on5 moment of hockey.
Devils 1-1 Giants. Towe from Stone and Adams at 42:12.
The Devils had several more chances during the remaining time of the 3rd period, seemingly having had a rocket fired at them during the 2nd period break, the passing and general play was an improvement on the previous 2 periods. However the score at the end of 60minutes was 1-1 and we were going into overtime at 10:30pm on a Sunday night...
Just 42seconds into overtime, the Devils managed to find that magic spot, and with a fluffed shot from Latulippe somehow finding its way into the back of the net, the Devils were victors for the 1st time this season against the Belfast Giants.
Devils 2-1 Giants. Latulippe from Hartwick at 60:42.
Giants man of the match went to Nathan Craze who stood in for Murphy who is still suffering from injury.
Devils man of the match again went to Lyle who was playing against his former team.
