12th Dec 2009 | Posted by The-Inferno

The Devils let a 1 goal lead slip and put their title contetion further into doubt with a rare loss at home.

Both teams were without 3 key members of their sides for this clash, with the Blaze missing Soderstrom, Owen and Watkins. The Devils were without Jarvis who remains injured and Davies & Hayes who are on GB u20's duty. Devils had called Fisher up from the ENL team to provide some cover.

The first period provided an idea of what was to come over the following 2.5hours with some great end to end play. The Blaze provided some early pressure and were only denied by the pipework at 9:06. However it was the Devils who took the lead when Hartwick found a way through the Blaze defence...

Devils 1-0 Blaze. Hartwick unassisted at 9:38.

With both teams going full pelt for the win, scrambles at both ends of the ice were far too close for comfort for both sets of fans. The Blaze were presented with 3 powerplay opportunities during the first period and on the 3rd finally managed to find a way past Lyle after Miller was called for elbows at 15mins exactly.

Devils 1-1 Blaze. Carlson from Calder and Chambers at 16:02. PPG.

The second period finished with the score at 1-1, Brian Lee for Blaze had taken a penalty at 19:11 to ensure the 2nd period would start with the Devils on another powerplay. Devils 2-1 Blaze. Latulippe from Michel and Adams at 20:48. PPG.

The Devils continued to pile pressure on the Blaze who were forced to ice the puck in order to stop the relentless opportunities, however the Devils finishing wasn't up to scratch and despite all the shots, Hirsch couldn't be beaten. The Devils were presented with their biggest chance at 26:10 when Robinson was called for 2mins delay of game to add to Cowleys 2mins at 25:53 for high sticks, 1:43 of 5on3 but the Devils couldn't find a way through Hirsch who again kept the Blaze in it.

With both teams taking penalties at 29:13, the game was reduced to 4on4 and it was the Blaze who managed to score...

Devils 2-2 Blaze. Carlson from Weaver at 30:07.

The Blaze took the lead for the first time with just under 2minutes of the 2nd period remaining when Campbell managed to fight his way through a horder of Devils players to reach the puck first despite the Devils winning the faceoff...

Devils 2-3 Blaze. Campbell from Cowley at 38:10.

The 2nd period finished with the Blaze again taking a penalty towards the end of the period to ensure the Devils started the 3rd and final period with a powerplay opportunity. Devils had most of the possession and control during the 2nd but Hirsch kept the Blaze in it. Shots on goal for the 2nd period read Devils: 12, Blaze: 5...

Just over 7minutes into the 3rd period chaos reined when Campbell crosschecked Devils captain Voth into Blaze netminder Hirsch and then began to lay into him. With lying prone on the ice, Campbell skated over to the Devils bench looking for another penalty, but Voth was back up and round 2 began. With no clear winner, both players were ejected at 47:04, Campbell received 5+game+match for crosschecking and fighting, Voth receiving 2+match for instigating and fighting.

The Blaze took another penalty at 49:38 when Lee was penalised for roughing. The Devils called a timeout before the powerplay began and it seemed to work it's magic, when play resumed it was the Devils who scored...

Devils 3-3 Blaze. Birbraer unassisted at 50:10. PPG.

With the score equalised, the Devils began a 3 penalty run when first Birbraer was called for tripping at 53:15 despite lying on the ice and being plainly visible. Just over 1minute later and it was again the Devils who were called for a penalty at 54:56 when michel was called for slashing despite having no stick to slash with... Somehow the Devils managed to stay in the game despite the 3on5 in Blaze favour when just 2seconds into having 5 skaters they were again penalised, this time Hartwick was called for roughing at 55:17...

The Devils managed to kill all penalties and with just under 3minutes to go the Blaze somehow scored. Fans were left asking how the Devils couldn't concede on 3on5, or 4on5 but concede as soon as the Devils return to 5 players...

Devils 3-4 Blaze. Chambers unassisted at 57:55.

The 3rd period finished 3-4 Blaze and the Devils great run of home form was ruined, despite pulling Lyle for the man advantage inside the last minute, Hirsch again kept the Blaze in the game until the end.
