Devils 4-1 Giants

11th Jan 2010 | Posted by Mark Finn

The Devils took revenge on the visiting Belfast Giants, dealing out their own 4-1 victory after losing the previous weekend 4-1 to the Giants in Belfast.

Only 1 minute into the game, McMorrow had targetted Michel infront of the Devils net, but in waded Voth and in a short, but exciting fight the Devils captain came out on top only to be given a 5+2+10 fighting penalty.

After the Voth-McMorrow incident, the Devils ended up on PK. After winning the puck Latulippe tried to clear the zone, only to fire it over the boads and into the Belfast bench.

The Devils bench thought this wasn't a penalty but Hicks did so the Devils faced a 5-on-3. The PK was excellent though and incredibly it was the Devils who created the best chances with Smith and Finnerty both counter-attacking on their own and forcing Murphy into the save.

The Voth penalty was killed off but with the Giants still on the PP, Bateman broke past the Devils D and flicked a back-handed shot which beat Lyle.

Devils 0-1 Giants.

Still fired up from the earlier fight though, the Devils took the game to the Giants. Belfast started to lose their discipline, and after Hicks let several infringements go he started to clamp down on Belfast and it led to a 5-on-3 for the Devils. After passing it around the puck was fired to Towe at the far post and his seemingly mis-hit shot looped over Murphy and into the net.

Devils 1-1 Giants

Devils were getting on top and 4 minutes later a clever pass from behind the net from Finnerty found Adams and his one time slapshot flew past Murphy and in just under the crossbar.

Devils 2-1 Giants

For some reason Tom Walsh went absolutely nuts with Hicks, and had to be restrained by the linesman and ending up with a 10 minute misconduct penalty. On watching the replay, it still seems bizarre as there was nothing wrong with the goal. In fact Walsh was stood alone not picking anyone up.

At the end of the period Hicks and his linesmen had a long chat with Thornton. Sounded to me like they were telling him that anymore backchat from Walsh would see him out of the game, and the rest of the players needed to remember that too.

Into the second period, and Belfast lost all self-control over their discipline. With the Devils already on a PP, Johnson decided to grab Miller by the shoulders and spin him to the ground. Right infront of Hicks. Claiming he never touched him he continued to moan all the way to the box.

Another 5-on-3 for the Devils. Once again they passed it around until Jarvis was given far too much time, he moved in on net and fired past Murphy.

Devils 3-1 Giants

As Hicks went to the box to give details of the goal, Johnson poked his head out of the bin and ranted at Hicks. 10 minute misconduct for Johnson.

Still the Giants didn't learn their lesson and again gave the Devils a PP opportunity. Straight from the face off the puck was dropped back to Smith, he passed it across to Richardson who let rip with a one-time slapshot. Murphy blocked it with his shoulder, the puck bounced up, landed infront of Murphy and then somehow spun under him and into the goal.

Devils 4-1 Giants

Belfast finally got the message and cut out the stupid stuff. The Devils ended up taking some penalties but a combination of solid defence and good netminding kept them out.

Towards the end of the second period the Giant picked up another penalty, and on the powerplay Finnerty fired his shot onto the post but it deflected to safety. After the whistle went Bateman picked up another 10 minute for misconduct.

Third period, and the Devils did a professional job of killing off the game - though they had chances to extend their lead further. Belfast worked hard and seemed to have more belief in scoring than Coventry did the night before - but in the end the Devils comfortably sat on their lead for the win.
