Panthers 2-1 Devils

7th Dec 2009 | Posted by The-Inferno

The Devils started their second away game of the weekend still missing Wes Jarvis and were looking to make amends for their 2-1 loss to Edinburgh the night before, alas it wasn't to be...

With Richardson taking over the 'A' from Jarvis, the game started with handbags and what proved to be the overall tone of the match. With voth and Panthers Richardson and Neilson penalised in the opening minutes, it was the Devils who found themselves with an early powerplay opportunity. Unfortunately the goals didn't come, but it was the Devils who came closest when Mark Smith beat St-Pierre only to see the puck ping off the pipework just under 3minutes into the game.

Stevie Lyle was again called on to be the last, and best line of defence the Devils had as they conceded another early penalty, with the defence seemingly struggling without Jarvis in the lineup the Panthers had no problems getting into and setting up in the Devils zone all period. However the 1st period ended 0-0, largely thanks to the efforts of Lyle.

The second period started with Voth receiving an additional 10minute misconduct to add to the 2minutes he had already received at 19:49. Despite the loss of the captain, the Devils continued to weather the storm and completely against the run of play somehow managed to grab the lead at 25:44.

It wasn't long though before the Panthers had scored though after some slack passing and play from the Devils. With Neilson returning to the ice after his penalty timed at 26:43, the Panthers found themselves easily able to skate into the Panthers zone and were rewarded with the goal.

A little under 2minutes later and the panthers had managed to find the back of the net again and had finally taken the league, the only surprise was how long it had taken them...

The second period finished with both teams taking more penalties and the Panthers coming awfully close to taking the lead when they saw a shot deflected off the pipework at roughly 37minutes in. The 3rd period started in a similar fashion and although the Devils had powerplay opportunities they were again denied by the pipework and St-Pierre.

Standout players during the 2nd and especially the 3rd period were Michel, Towe and Davies who fought for every puck and didn't let each other down, at one point they were camped in the Panthers zone for roughly 2minutes but could not find a way past St-Pierre.

With time running out for the Devils, the game began to get very scrappy and it was Voth again who was penalised after checking Richardson into St-Pierre and then fighting Neilson and Richardson. a somewhat questionable call of interference (hah) against Voth saw him binned at 57:22.

The Devils had a later window of opportunity at 59:34 when the Panthers were called for tripping, however despite pulling Lyle and having a 2man advantage the Devils couldn't find a way through and the game ended on a sour note as Voth finally dropped the gloves with D'Armour. a pretty even, if unexciting fight saw both players ejected before the handshakes.
