Panthers v Devils - 25/10
28th Oct 2009 | Posted by The-Inferno
The Cardiff Devils crashed to a 6-5 defeat again the Nottingham Panthers, failing to break the hoodoo the NIC has over them.
Jamie Hayes stepped into the lineup again, despite having a fight in the last 2 minutes of the previous nights game, many were left wondering what had happened to the EIHL's ruling on fighting in the last 5 minutes, unfortunately this wasn't the only disappointment with regards to the rules.
The game started with end to end hockey, but from the start it felt like the Devils were going to be on the losing side, lacking the physical and slick play which had helped them defeat earlier teams. Nottingham opened the scoring just over halfway into the 1st period.
Panthers 1-0 Devils. McAslan from Richardson and Neilson at 11:47.
The Panthers were quick to capitalise on a powerplay given to them when Smith was called for tripping at 12:21. With the Devils defending, the Panthers managed to drill the puck home and take a 2-0 lead.
Panthers 2-0 Devils. Bergin from Neilson and McAslan at 12:21.
The Devils now trailing by 2 goals seemed to be missing an awful lot of passes and gifting Nottingham a fair number of chances, only Lyle standing in the way. Turning things around the Devils managed to set themselves up in the Panthers zone and some smart passes led to Miller scoring for the Devils. Panthers Bruce Richardson complained to Hicks, but the puck appeared to come off a Panthers players own skate with no kicking motion.
Panthers 2-1 Devils. Miller from Adams and Jarvis at 17:59.
Going into the last minute of the first period, the Panthers continued to pile the pressure onto the Devils and were only denied a 3rd goal by some help from the pipework of the Devils goal. The 2nd period started with the Devils seemingly shaking off their bus legs and quickly getting into action, some good play from the 2nd and 3rd lines saw Hill capitalise and bring the Devils right back into the game.
Panthers 2-2 Devils. Hill from Adams and Latulippe at 21:11.
Devils continued to apply the pressure until Scott Romfo was hit with a penalty at 24:28 for holding. Almost 2 minutes of sustained pressure from the Panthers was dealt with, but with just 10 seconds to go until romfo returned to the ice, the Panthers managed to find their man and scored a 3rd.
Panthers 3-2 Devils. Clarke from Gascon and Mann at 26:16.
The Panthers continued to apply pressure to the Devils, with passes going wrong and the players avoiding the physical play which they're known for chances were gifted and it was only thanks to Lyle in the Devils nets that the Panthers didn't score again until 32:52.
Panthers 4-2 Devils. D'Armour from Mann and Toneys at 32:52.
The Devils were kept under pressure from the opening faceoff again, until some simple play (finally) set Latulippe up who managed to skate through the Nottingham defence and fire one in. The Devils were almost back in the game...
Panthers 4-3 Devils. Latulippe unassisted at 34:38.
The last 5minutes of the 2nd period were signalled by some outstanding saves from Lyle, with the Devils defence going AWOL at key times, it was left to the last line of defence to stop the Panthers from running away with the game. The Devils did have some good chances during the 2nd, but overall it was the Panthers period again.
The 3rd period opened with the Devils losing the opening faceoff again and coming under even more pressure from the Panthers. Lyle was called upon to make some brilliant saves to deny the Panthers, but unfortunately they managed to get one in just over 2 minutes into the period.
Panthers 5-3 Devils. Clarke from Toneys and Mann at 42:23.
The Devils started to look lost on the Nottingham ice pad, passing going wrong and plays being broken up with ease by the Panthers. The poor play led to another Panthers goal and took the Panthers to an assumed unbeatable lead.
Panthers 6-3 Devils. Mann from Brice and Galbraith at 44:04.
The Devils called a timeout after the Panthers 6th goal, with the Devils fans screaming for the players to start playing physical hockey and play like they knew they could a goal was delivered from Latulippe, who once again skated through the Nottingham defence.
Panthers 6-4 Devils. Latulippe from Birbraer and Voth at 47:00.
Unfortunately after the Devils 4th goal, the Panthers continued to press home their advantage, with the referee letting lots go on both sides, the game became niggly but the Devils still refused to hit anything. The Devils could not capitalise on any powerplays given to them and refused to chase anything down, gifting the Panthers lots of space on the large NIC ice pad to play as they wanted. Despite being 2 goals down, Lyle was pulled and with the extra skater, the Devils managed to grab one goal back.
Panthers 6-5 Devils. Smith from Voth and Birbraer at 59:42.
Some extremely dodgy calls from the linesmen and the Devils were prevented from attempting to find the 6th and equalising goal after the linesmen called icing, despite the puck being touched by the Panthers player. The Panthers ended the game winners at 6 goals to 5.
