Arenas of the Elite League

Thread starter #1
The following arena capacities have been taken from the Wikipedia page for the Elite Ice Hockey League:

Odysssey Arena - 8,000
Braehead Arena - 3,750
Cardiff Arena - 2,500
Coventry Skydome - 3,600
Dundee Ice Arena - 3,300
Murrayfield Ice Rink - 4,800
Fife Ice Arena - 4,280
The Hull Arena - 3,000
National Ice Centre - 8,000
Sheffield - 13,500

Before you all start; yes, I know this is from Wikipedia and anyone can change it, but I want to address several things in this thread.

Firstly, some of these capacities are spot on and fairly rounded up when others are woefully inaccurate and I want to find out why. My first suspicion is that the hockey fan/s who kindly compiled these rinks on Wikipedia may have made the mistake of stating the maximum capacity for musical events and the like as opposed to the accurate ice hockey capacity.

Another thought is that someone may have tweaked the capacities of the UK's top league, perhaps with the intention or promoting a positive perception of it by foreign ice hockey fans (note that the only arena with a stated capacity of under 3,000 is Cardiff's, probably due to its 'temporary' status).

I accept the action of rounding up, but to round up Cardiff maximum capacity of 2,300 to 2,500 is an exaggeration of 8.7%. If the same exaggeration of capacity was applied to a football stadium of 33,343 seats that would create roughly 3,000 fictional seats and you can't call a 33,500 seater stadium a 36,500 seater one now can you? Rounding up by 0.47% to make 33,500 from 33,343 is completely reasonable.

Again, the capacity for Coventry here sees a ridiculous capacity increase of 33.3%! All I want is all the capacities ice hockey for each of these arenas, but even when I dig online they are hard to find. So people of the Inferno, help me find definitive capacities that are rounded up with an absolute maximum of 1% as they do with rugby and football grounds.

I think they are all some way off with the exception of ours and Braeheads who aren't too far away. Some of those are thousands out.

Belfast & Sheffield have temporary seating that they can bring out, I think (Belfast definitely). Sheffield is around 8,500 without the extra seating, but their record is over 10,000.

I went to a 'sold-out' Coventry game a couple of years ago, Beleskey's first match, and the attendance was 2895 (http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/stats/game ... me_id=1332).

NIC is closer to 7,500 I think as well.

I've noticed Braehead repeatedly say they have 4,000 seats, but when they sell out they appear to get closer to 3,500.

I've got the official capacities at home. I can post them tonight if nobody has done that before.
Yes please if you could. We should all combine our findings for accurate results.

The one I really can't believe is Hull, I've never been but in the pictures I've seen it looks smaller than the Wales National Arena.

The new skydome "skylounge"built in the summer added an extra 40 seats

I don't think Braehead's is that big either. It's listed everywhere as 4,000 but their 'sell outs' have been no more than 3500.

I've done some more maths guys...
I've worked out the average attendances for each elite league team this year so far:

Panthers - 5,186
Giants - 4,686
Steelers - 3,863
Clan - 2,949
Flyers - 2,217
Blaze - 2,043
Devils - 2,011
Stars - 1,020
Capitals - 849
Stingrays - N/A*

*no attendances stated on game sheets

This is interesting when compared with the capacities. Cardiff's average attendance is 87.4% of the tent's maximum capacity this season! That's amazing!

Also, the average attendance for an elite league ice hockey game is 2,758.

The Steelers average at the motorpoint is similar to Belfast's at the O - about 4800. However, we also play 6 or so games at the 1500 capacity Ice Sheff (usually games like weekdays v the Caps etc) which drags the average down. Although we've played 3 more than that this year due to the ice plant problem last September. IS is a lot cheaper to hire than the motorpoint apparently.

There's a fan produced steeler stats website that lists just about all scores and attendance's going bank to 1991 on't t'interweb somewhere.

Makes some comments about being a picked on little team from the Clan fans over the recent bannings look pretty silly

FYI, this is the website that lists the Steelers attendances, inc a break down between Ice Sheff and the Motorpoint Arena. http://www.steelersstats.co.uk/easy_input/attendances.htm

An interesting roll call of half forgotten teams.
