Ice hockey: John Lawless in return to Cardiff Devils
by Terry Phillips, South Wales Echo, May 26 2011

JOHN Lawless, the man who launched Cardiff Devils ice hockey 25 years ago, will be back in South Wales during August.

Canadian Lawless has agreed to be head coach to a team of Devils all-time legends – and they will take on a team from Sheffield Steelers led by Ron Shudra.

Lawless was the man who set up and coached Devils in 1986 and played a leading role as they became one of the most powerful ice hockey teams in the UK.

He is returning to South Wales for two legends matches – the first at Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield and the second at Cardiff Bay Arena.

Next day, in Cardiff Bay, there will be two matches – the legends followed by an Elite League return.

The Festival events start on Thursday, August 25 with a golf day at the Glamorganshire Club, Penarth. Legends players and current Devils will be taking part.

Next day, Cardiff City Hall is the setting for a banquet. Devils fans will be able to meet up with former players – and be among the first to meet the 2011-12 Elite League team.

Tickets are priced at £40 for season ticket holders, £45 for others.

Those events in Cardiff will be followed by the Festival of Hockey action over the weekend.

Cardiff Devils chief executive Paul Ragan says: “Devils have an incredible history and it is only fitting that in our club’s 25th year we pay tribute to those who have been, continue to be and will be a part of our club’s fantastic successes.

“The Festival of Hockey is going to be the sporting event of the summer with the return of Devils legends for a series of hockey battles of epic proportions.”
