Stingrays sign...

EXCEL Hull Stingrays will hand a surprise debut to Aivars Gaisins against table-toppers Coventry on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Latvian defenceman is a former team-mate of netminder Marty Raitums.

He has been training with Stingrays this season, but only signed on Thursday as injury cover – taking up the club's 15th and final International Transfer Card.

Gaisins is already living and working in Hull.

He replaces Jeff Glowa, who suffered concussion in Stingrays' 2-1 penalty shot win over Cardiff, in a challenge which left Max Birbraer with a 2+10 checking to the head penalty.

"Aivars is going to be excited about playing," said Stingrays' coach Sylvain Cloutier.

"He asked me at the start of the season if he could play for us and now he's finally got his chance.

"He's a strong, stay-at-home defenceman, but I think I'll play him on the wing."

I also has concussion after losing to Hull. Repetitive head butting is bad for you and should carry a government health warning!
