Not making any excuses for the idiot, but ice hockey is a lot tougher than field hockey, can you imagine going down the wing and being knocked into the next pitch, think a long ban might be enforced then.

Having played field hockey internationally and ice hockey for 15+ years I think I can say with some authority field hockey ain't that soft in comparison. The pain just comes in different ways.

The difference is field hockey is run very well in this country and although not fully professional is is far and away more professional in its outlook and organisation than ice hockey in this country is, even at the highest level.

The sport doesn't matter. You touch a ref you do time. God knows I have in both for different incidents with referees. The Eliteleague is just very poor at protecting its officials. Any physical act directed toward a ref should be carrying a 25 game tarif. You see a player swing his stick then especially because the club can have privilage to cut his contract. You want it stopped. Six games just doesn't send the message.

That isn't a viewpoint just based on this incident. It should be a line in the sand for every player on every team.

Not condoning this in any way at all, but it is only a matter of time before something like this, only worse happens. The standard of officiating and bias the refs show is awful. They are completely unaccountable and the league seem scared to question calls incase they jack it in and we're short of officials. Unless the standard improves then this will unfortunately happen again.
Oh, yes. And allowing players to physically intimidate refs will help, won't it.

Have a word with yourself. You say you don't condone it but then all but excuse it by saying the referees bring it on themselves. It wasn't a matter of time at all. No matter how bad the call, the referee in any sport must be respected.

Why would anyone want to be a ref? Non-stop abuse from players and fans and now not even being properly protected by the league. Pathetic EIHL.

With Clarke having already missed 1 game and another 5 to go, looks like that includes the Devils game over in Belfast after Christmas. ;)

No idea what he thought but surely this should be judged on what was seen? Sorry he has no excuse what a totally ridiculous thing to do ..... He is indeed a grateful recepient of the leagues Christmas goodwill to all men approach !

Rumours going around that Jeff Szwez is set to re-join the Giants to replace the departed Brock Mcbride
Isn't that a fairly common rumour whenever Giants are looking for a player though?

Dont recall him being mentioned in the off season tbh. The Daily mail reported the Giants had signed a player only for his club to not release him due to injuries. (beleived to be AP as it all fits) all of a sudden these two players are fit again and the next day JS leaves, so a bit more substance this time. :|

Dont know about Hartwicks pocket but he was in the winning P/O side

It could be a template for our " Weller might come back " rumour :D

Perhaps Jester, DWD or one of the regular Teal Army can clarify this.......didn't Szwez leave the Giants because he wanted an opportunity in Europe? Despite the Giants' success, I am struggling to see how a guy who has played for 1 and half seasons in a European league (DEL) would want to come back to this league? Is'nt it more likely that he will go to another DEL or top European league? Unless of course, well, the obvious reason for returning......... ;)

Would be a fantastic addition to the Giants if he returned - wonderful player. The Giants are finding ways to win despite being short-benched. They will be in the battle for the top until the end.

Asship, IIRC he was offered a contract but AP came in with a better offer also he was eligible for a german passport ( so unlike the EIHL he didn't count as an import) he then ended up on basically the AP 3 or 4 checking/ grinder line. This season he has had very little ice time .
I have no idea if these are the reasons he has left.
But would be quite happy if he ends up in Belfast again.

Thanks for that. If ice-time is an issue, then it's understandable that a player would want to move on. I think most fans around the league that season were expecting him to be sought after in Europe. Although no-one is really indispensible (apart from Craig Weller and Tylor Michel ;) ), Szwez was certainly a player who could be described as 'the ultimate power forward'.

Indeed - but it does make you wonder why he's been unsigned for so long this season.
