New rink

Echo today states that we are now to get a new stand alone rink by december 2011.

Can't find a link though

This is great news as long as we do eventually get the arena. Having a 3,000 seat rink would be a great way to build up our fan base ready for the move to the bigger arena. However, won't CCC have to start construction soon to get it finished by December 2011?

PS - please whoever is designing this make the seating a complete bowl and not a crappy horseshoe configuration!

Tom Morgan wrote in the report that one of the options being considered is also “major upgrading and extension of the existing facility”.

Please tell me that he is only thinking about this for the next two years....

I'm with Mazza on this one. It looks promising but, we have had too many false dawns before.

I would rather a 3,000 seater with smaller ice pad.

Shuff and Nottingham feel dead most the time. Until there is real support for ice hockey, too big a rink would be more detrimental than helpful.

We can't sell out what we have. Even if we double the numbers we would barely dent an arena.

I'm quite surprised there hasn't been more comment on this yet, this is a massive step for us. I know nothing is certain in this recession but this is the first time we have seen the council make an announcement like this with no prompting by fan action etc and this announcement is really more than most of us expected given the current economic crisis. The relationship Matt and Shannon enjoy with the council is really having a good effect on this club and doors are now opening to us that have been closed for a long time here in Cardiff.

As Mazza said I will won't hold my breath but this is a large step forward for us and our future.

The lack of clamouring is a good sign. It indicates that the club are seeing things move forward with the council in a way they are happy with, and that the fans trust the ownership of the club.

If we were out on the streets shouting, it makes it all contentious and gets peoples backs up. If there is no need for that action, then it is a good thing.

In terms of a permanent 3,000 capacity venue, I'm sure they could upgrade the tent to achieve that. After all, most the major structure is demountable at the moment. Clad it, complete the bowl, and bobs your auntie's live in lover - a big improvement. If budget can be found to soup up the off ice facilities, and the sight lines, then it could be a decent home for years to come :D

Also, if they come up with the money to build a multi-purpose arena - there would be no need to actually decamp to there if there is a decent rink. If we could get close to filling the rink for most home games, then big games could be moved to the arena. I would rather have control of our home, rather than have to fit it around other events. Look at the problems the arena teams have securing ice time.

I think if they could seat 3000 in Ice Sheffield, Steelers would be tempted to move their home to there. I remember reading they struggle to break even on most home games in the Arena, and next season looking at closing off sections of the upper tier to try and improve the atmosphere.

I hope your wrong about that :)

If we are getting a new venue which is to be permanent it needs to be a NEW venue which has been planned and thought through, not an extension to the tent :p

I think I overheard Matt say last night that they are looking into both improving the current rink, or building a new arena.

If it came down to the decision of:
-new arena built in say 3 years, but no work done on current rink
-current rink improved, upgraded and expanded in the summer ready for the start of the new season

which would you prefer?

If they can lower the seating and complete the bowl, I would be pretty happy staying in the current rink for several more seasons.

I'm with Finny. There isn't that much wrong with the tent, apart from the tent nature of the building. Plus, that very tent nature would make the next big 'upgrade' far easier and cheaper than building a new facility, and probably not look like an extension.

If they could fix the gripes, well the large ones, then it would become a venue to be proud of.

To me, put actual walls on there (and is the roof solid, or blue tarp as well?) and make it warmer. Sort the stairs and sight lines (expensive, but probably not as expensive as building somewhere new) and improve the hospitality area. We can loose some car park as long as we can use the one down the road, and actually make this rink something that actually fills our requirements.

Moving to (yet another) new venue runs the risks that we will see mistakes repeated (or new ones we never thought of), and also be homeless for a period again.

I would be happy to stay in the tent as long as sight lines were improved, if sight lines were not improved then i would go for a new home.
Im quite happy with the blue tent, get in a better sound system, better walls and off ice facilities and it would be more than adequate for the time being.
But i won't complain if they want to build us somewhere new :D, i think the reason so few people have commented on this is because we have been let down far too many times by CCC to really trust in what they say.
We've still got to see what happens with the lease for the tent over the summer so that will be interesting.

Imo the LAST thing you need is a huge arena.

3,000 seats is about right, bonus if you can actually see the ice from all of them.

Anything more than that will end up being half empty and would have an atmosphere to rival the sponsordome.

This is very positive news indeed. The fact the council has published a report saying we will have a 3000 seater facility by 2011 in the current economic climate is very bold and encouraging to say the least but is a healthy sign that relationships between the Devils and the council are very positive.

Putting aside the how and where the facility will be constructed for a moment, the fact we will have an ice rink and not a multi-purpose arena to play out of is massive for the club and skating community as a whole. We will not be dictated by the lease holders when other ventures are concerned. We will not have to pay arena rental costs which have crippled many a club in this country. Having an ice rink is fantastic news.

The line Tom Morgan is quoted saying that an option is ‘major upgrading and extension of the existing facility’ suggests to me that the current facility will be the eventual home of our 3000 seater permanent rink. I don’t see that as a bad thing. As long as the investment is there to work on what we have then great as far as I’m concerned.

We have to consider timing and location. Albeit originally against our will, we are now established in Cardiff Bay. This is out home and marketing has been geared to raising awareness of our location and our club. There are still plans for a multipurpose arena down the bay as part of the wider development of Cardiff City Centre and Cardiff IPV so there isn’t anywhere else in that location where it can be put. Also, to find a piece of land and do all the foundation work is going to take a lot a time and 2011 is not that far away believe it or not.

This is very encouraging news and I for one am excited about any development to the current rink.

I agree I think it's likely we'll end up with an overhaul of the current rink. However, I believe the site where the current Devils car park is, was originally intended for the casino/hotel so that would now be free I guess. Also, the snow box is due to be built where the tent is at the moment.

Great news though and the most sustainable option for the Devils in the medium term at least. Hopefully it will be something similar to the skydome, but with a full bowl and of a higher quality.

I'd also like to see them make use of our fantastic location by building a mini-plaza (drinking/socializing area) on the bay-side of the arena.

The big draw back on modernising the tent is that we would once again be without ice for a while. I really don't fancy starting another season on the road should the developers fail to meet a deadline again.

Ideally it should be a new building which can run alongside the tent until its completely finished and all teams and figure skaters can walk straight into it.

I could be wrong, but wasn't there something in the article about Tom Morgan stating about a contingency in the event of the deadline being missed?
