I think you should be commended for the block 13 idea. It works well generally and you’re right, there was little atmosphere down that end before. But I respectfully disagree with you that the megaphone works. It doesn’t - at all. In my opinion (and I’m not alone), it kills the atmosphere. It‘s just terrible. No problem at all with the other stuff though.
I'd argue that what kills the atmosphere is having music blasted over the fans mid chant, now that absolutely kills any sort of atmosphere lol

The way the entire blocks evolved over the years has great points as well as some bad points and I can agree with you that there has been a couple of times when the megaphone hasn't been used properly and it's sounded dog awful but I'll always give them the benefit of the doubt, they'll evolve it and get something worked out

I agree with you on that one. That’s where Sully was so good in the DJ booth. He knew when to stop the music and let the fans get on with it. It doesn’t happen so much anymore unfortunately.
3 game suspension for Ulett - slightly fortunate to not get more for me.

Good to know that a deliberate attempt to injure an opponent with your stick Is ONLY 3 games. Play Harewood next game and get him to wrap his stick around Ullets head for just three games. Seems a fair trade to me.
DOPs really are useless.

Block 13 is not a bad idea in itself, it's just not being executed very well. And also not helping, is I don't think the set up of the arena is suited for it either.
I've been lucky to see domestic league games all around Europe, and the best atmospheres do have a designed section for 'ultras'. But, EIHL fans like to think they're loud and there's good atmosphere, but unfortunately it's pale in comparison to most on the mainland.
I'll try and be careful how I phrase this but block 13 is just not intimidating at all, and I think for a section like that to work, it has to have an air of intimidation. Otherwise nobody really takes much notice, unless it's bad that is. It's mainly the demographic of the block, but also the chants that remind me of MLS soccer fans chants is why it gives off primary school sports day vibe rather than a hockey game.
When you think back to the BBT and the WNIR, long before many block 13ers were interested in hockey, the atmosphere was better. And of course those buildings were more conductive to noise, but having the noise more evenly spread around the rink made it easier for people to join in. Most season ticket holders are now on the other side of the arena to 13, like I am in 5, and if it sounds bad like the megaphone, or a droning 'DEVILS, DEVILS, DEVILS' chant that goes on for 5 minutes, we think why bother joining it with that.

Would be interesting to get the players' honest views on the effectiveness of that kind of chanting. Does it help them? If it's tuneless droning on a megaphone, does it affect their concentration, their performance?

In the past, the entire arena singing and chanting passionately and proudly at key games (CC Final etc)and our early appearances in CHL games was something to behold a few years ago. Was this before the official formation of any Noisy Block?

The BBT and WNIR famed for their universal chanting. A chant could start in any block and ripple around. But those buildings were conducive to singing the crowd was closer to the play. You could hear the noise in those buildings from the carparks!

Yes it was. Can we say now that the atmosphere for the arena as a whole is better after the formation of block 13? Personally I don't think we can, and it's also caused some division in the fan base among other things.
I think it's a shame, because as I said in my previous post, having sections like that can create great atmospheres, so I'm definitely not against it in principle. But we haven't got the fans, the chants, the arena or the resources to make it successful.

I really hope this megaphone nonsense is curtailed, in the same way that we stopped the use of airhorns and I think the use of instruments by away fans. But, if not, and we have to have it, it needs to used more sensibly. Maybe start a chant off with it, then stop when the fans have joined in. When fans are chanting too, why continue with the out of tune droning when that’s all you can hear and it’s drowning out the fans and killing the moment?! It defeats the object of having it surely and then just smacks of some topless bloke saying ’look at me’.

The whole block 13 thing and megaphone is just cringey.

Someone mentioned they’re like hooligans; I wish they were more like that if I’m honest. It’s more like Slimming World in a church hall than Soul Crew in the Grange End. It doesn’t generate any atmosphere for the rest of the rink, maybe within the block but that’s it. Every new person I’ve brought to a game has commented on it in a negative way and ended up thinking hockey games in the UK are full of weirdos.

The response to ullet in the next game will tell me everything I need to know about this group. Personally speaking of he's not forced to go first shift time to send someone packing and get someone with gonads. Can't have barrow who's arguably our most effective all rounder targeted in this manner

Don't you think it's a bit contradictory that you want one of our players to do a similar dog act that he did? Barrow hurt one of their guys last game, which probably was the motivation for Ullett this time, we can't condemn his actions last night then wish one of ours do the same.
